Incompetent Designers: Home Depot’s “Design Experts” don’t have any experience. As they designed my kitchen, I would have had an air vent blocked. I needed to re-design my own kitchen. They should not claim to do “custom cabinets.”
Shoddy Workmanship: Support pieces were bowed, parts were sloppily put together with globs of glue, joints were loose.
Cheap materials: The solid wood Kraftmade cabinets were constructed so that they looked solid, but the cheap Ikea cabinets they were replacing were about the same or better. Home Depot’s attitude seems to be that appearance is more important than quality.
They cannot fulfill an order: I received a different corner cabinet than the one I ordered and several doors with the wrong type of glass. Since it can take weeks to re-order the correct parts, this can cost hundreds in contractor costs.
No one can make a decision: Home Depot gives you the run around. Scott tells you to talk to Fred who tells you to speak to Gerry the manager who puts you back in touch with Rhonda who tells you to speak with Christine the supervisor who tells you to talk to Lupi the Zone Manager who tells you to speak to Eric who then tells you to call Scott. And no one seems to have the authority to make a real decision.
15% Restocking Fee: To add insult to injury they charge a 15% restocking fee on custom orders. To be fair they backed down when I fought this fee, but just the idea of a restocking fee on an order of their low quality cabinets is insane.
Home Depot can’t do simple math: They send their people to measure my kitchen and they still can’t get the measurements correct. That’s another re-order.
No plans: When my kitchen arrived there were no plans—just obscure codes on the boxes. Finally after some run around I got a set of the plans.
Delivery and pickup take forever: Since I live in an 800 sq foot apartment I don’t have much space. Why does it take almost a month to pick up some boxes?
Worst customer service: The home depot flagship store in Manhattan must be well run and professional, right? Dead wrong! I’ve never experienced worse customer service.
